The purpose of this web site is to provide a brief history of an important aspect of American 20 th century pop culture, pin-up art. While their function has been mostly one of male entertainment, I believe that when these images are placed within their social context, they provide a revealing glimpse of our collective psyche. By presenting a broad range of sources and insights, including quotes from feminists, "pornographers," and the pin-ups themselves, I hope to provide a well-rounded (but by no means complete) history of the American woman.
One side-note: While for the greater part of history, women and the images of women have been controlled overwhelmingly by men, the Internet has empowered this generation to control the representation and distribution of their own images. While it is arguable that all of this is still taking place with the purpose of entertaining mostly men, I think that with the arrival of new media, the purpose and variety within pin-up art is changing radically. And I hope that this web site will be one of those ways.
