DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY

Welcome to the Department of Psychology Faculty Webpage

The Department of Psychology provides a variety of opportunities to work with faculty members in different areas. For your convenience, we have categorized the department into 5 main research focal points. Many of our faculty have interests spanning more than one concentration. These concentrations are as follows:

  • Individual Differences: Faculty in this area are interested in differences between people and/or in how people relate to one another. Some faculty are interested primarily in problematic functioning and associated interventions (e.g., depression, hostility, narcissism, stress, personality disorders), while others are interested in normal or adaptive functioning (e.g., intelligence, creativity, cultivation of virtues and strengths). Individual differences of interest include personality factors, psychological disorders, and sociocultural variables such as ethnicity and religiosity.

  • Social Processes: Faculty in this area are interested in how people perceive, influence, and relate to one another. Sample topics include responses to interpersonal transgression, social support incases of serious illness, and social comparison

  • Cognitive and Perceptual Sciences: Faculty in this area are interested in how people process information and how they perceive the world. Faculty in this area are interested in topics such as memory, perception, and cognitive development. Some specialize in the study of intelligence, including work in the area of mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

  • Emotion: Faculty in this area all share a common interest in studying emotion. Some emphasize neuroscience and other physiological aspects of emotion, while others focus on the subjective experiences and behavioral tendencies associated with specific emotions or mood states (e.g., depression and suicidality; hostility; forgiveness; giving and receiving altruistic love).

  • Development and Aging: Faculty in this area are interested in how people develop across the lifespan. A number of our faculty focus specifically on children and adolescents, whether in pediatric settings, on psychopathology, or on the development of creativity in children. Others conduct research relevant to the lives of older adults.
