J x B Swing Demo

Lab Demonstration

An aluminum bar is hung from a ringstand by two lead wires. A current is passed through the bar and a moderately large magnetic field is impressed on part of the bar.

The bar can be made to either lift or swing, depending on the direction of B. Use of our strongest horseshoe magnet (or a coil with at least 1000 ampere turns) would be most effective in this demonstration.

Further information on Theory, Apparatus, Procedure, and Helpful Hints is available. The equipment for this demo is stored in Rockefeller room 302.
