The course: This is the second course of a two semester sequence
(MATH 321-322) whose object is to teach mathematical
reasoning in the context of analysis in n-dimensional space
(with emphasis on n=1) and which is
required for all mathematics majors. It may also be of interest to all
"mathematically oriented" undergraduates who wish to achieve a higher degree of
understanding of the mathematical tools used in their areas. A parallel
objective is to learn to write in "mathematical prose," so in some way this
is a course with a writing component.
The same sequence
is offered as MATH 421-422 to graduate students from departments other than
Mathematics (additional work may be required). See also the
Catalog Description.)
Material to be covered: Chapters 6-9 of the textbook in detail and selected topics from Chapters 10 and 11. There may be some additional topics addressing more explicitly the analysis on the n-dimensional space.
Computers, network etc.: Most of the 'out of class' course related communications will take place over the Internet. Additionally, there may be a modest computational component of the course (e.g., involving numerical integration or other approxmation schemes).
Grades: Your Final Grade in the course will be based on Attendance/Homework/Class Participation (40%), Midterm Exam (20%, tentative date: Thursday, March 5, in class) and Final Exam (40%, Monday, May 4, 12:30PM - 3:30PM). Students with special needs should contact ESS.
Assigments etc: Regularly updated assignments, exam dates and such will be posted here.
Integrity: It is OK (and indeed encouraged) to discuss homework assignments with fellow students. However, any submitted work must be your own. Merely copying someone else's work is unethical, a waste of time and may be penalized. See CWRU academic integrity policy.
