An expanded Lab 2.2, p. 230-231,
"Cooperative and Competitive Species," will serve as Project 1.
The project is due on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015 (in class, or by 4:00 p.m. in
my office, or by 11:59 p.m. by email).
It will be worth 30 points. Here are the details.
Again, some of the instructions below specify the work that needs to be done IN ADDITION to what Lab 2.2 asks to be done.
The project is to be done in teams of 2-3 people (preferably 2).
There is a choice of 4 sets of parameters (pairs of systems).
Make your choice as follows:
add the ID numbers of the members of your team and divide the sum by 4;
the remainder will give the "pair" to use
(if you get remainder 0, use pair (4)). For example, if the sum in question was 6472867,
you would use Pair (3).
All questions can be done without a computer,
but you may use (and probably should) use some software to produce graphs,
and of course to type.
The analysis in Questions 2 and 3 has to be performed using the tools from sections 5.1, 5.2.
In particular, the equilibrium points need to be rigorously classified, the nullclines (the curves from Question 2) explicitly found, and the long-term behavior determined (depending on various physically possible initial conditions, not only those satisfying x_0=0 or y_0=0).
