What is an internship?
Internships can be a valuable complement to your academic education, providing you with practical workplace experience while you are still doing your undergraduate work. But what exactly is an "internship"? An internship refers to an apprenticeship experience, where you learn on-the-job how to perform a particular kind of professional work -- in this case, technical and professional writing.

We can distinguish between a "private internship" and a "guided internship." In a private internship, you make your own arrangements to work for a company. In effect, a private internship is simply a job you get, whether part-time or summer employment, that allows you to develop a professional skill while you are still working on your undergraduate degree. In a "guided internship," you take a course at the same time that you work for some company. The idea here is that the course provides support and guidance as you do your professional work. Students in the course pool their experiences and learn from one another about how real workplace technical communication happens. The guided internship is a good way for students to get their first taste of practical work experience in a given field.

What is ENGL 375?
English 375, Internship in Technical Communication, is a new course to be offered in Spring 2001 for those CWRU students wishing to have a guided internship experience in technical or professional communication. Check the ENGL 375 course syllabus to learn about how to set this up. If you decide that you are interested in the guided ENGL 375 internship, contact me sometime during the fall semester, so that we can set this up.
