Powell room renovation
Following the successful completion
of the Millikin Room renovation of the Allen Memorial Medical Library,
and the installation there of the microscope gallery in October, 2000,
attention turned to the Lowman and Powell rooms. Together, these three
rooms comprised the other original "members rooms" of the Cleveland Medical
Library Association. They received the most care in design and décor when
the Allen was new, and for many years were essentially off limit to all
but members-in-good-standing of the Association. In recent years, they
became home to the history of medicine and science monograph collection.
The Board of Trustees of the CMLA, led by then-president Robert Shields,
felt that the Powell and Lowman rooms did not stand up in comparison to
the sparkling Millikin room. They therefore decided to undertake some
much-needed renovation and sprucing-up of those rooms, under the guidance
of Dittrick Chief Curator, Jim Edmonson.
