Shipwreck Camp 2007

Inspired by the exploration of scientist and explorer, Dr. Robert Ballard, finder of the wreckage of the Titanic, this camp experience will engage campers in field science and exploration weekdays from 9:30a.m. – 3:30p.m. starting Monday, July 30, 2007 through Friday, August 10, 2007.  In collaboration with Cleveland Lakefront State Park (ODNR), the Cuyahoga County Library,  and Case’s Center for Science and Mathematics Education, campers will:

  • *read novels related to exploration


  • *conduct the research necessary to find a wreck in Lake Erie
  • *using the tools of a scientist, follow a drop of water from  Squire Vallee Vue Farm to Lake Erie with an aquatic biologist

  • *embrace the history of the Great Lakes region with a nautical archaeologist

  • *immerse yourself in an introduction to  snorkeling and search and rescue techniques with the Cleveland Lakefront State Park Rescue Dive Team

  • *use GPS (Global Positioning System) and other navigational tools on land and water

  • *discover how weather contributes to shipwrecks in the Great Lakes

  • *build a boat, create the conditions for a shipwreck

  • *develop a plan and find a wreck

  • *share your discoveries and more

Campers will have their experiences at Case Western Reserve University and other sites throughout the camp experience   (e.g.  Cleveland Lakefront State Park, Squire Vallee Vue Farm,  Cuyahoga County Library, etc.) Each camper must be at least 12 years old , or, not older than 15 by the start of camp on July 30, 2007. 

Campers should be in good health, able to get into and out of small or large boats and, at minimum, not be afraid of water, insects, boats, the out of doors.  Swimming skills are advantageous but not required.    Computer skills in Microsoft word software packages helpful in compiling reports and building expedition plans.  Students will be working in teams and some activities will be photographed or video taped.
