OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEACHERS

The Center for Mathematics and Science Education, Teaching and Technology (CMSETT) at John Carroll University is hosting a Linking Data Symposium on Monday and Tuesday, December 6 & 7, 2004 at the Dolan Center for Science and Technology.  The focus of the two day event is to “educate” curriculum directors and other administrators, with a direct responsibility for their district’s curriculum implementation, on the importance of professional development for their teachers in the use of statistics in school curriculum in mathematics, science and social studies.  Benchmarks and Grade level indicators in these Ohio standards include expectations for students to understand how to appropriately gather, organize, analyze and report data.  Support from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation allow this symposium to be offered at a reduced cost of $50 per person (fee includes one follow-up in the spring).  Registration is limited to thirty administrators.  Contact Norm Schmidt for registration, or other additional, information (216-397-4598 or nschmidt@jcu.edu )

The Cleveland Regional Council of Science Teachers (CRCST) is holding their 33rd Annual Fall Conference at the Dolan Center for Science and Technology at John Carroll University on Saturday, October 30, 2004.  The Conference will include concurrent sessions for different grade levels and science content areas, a keynote address by Dr. Michael Nichols, a chemistry professor at JCU whose work involves stream quality and who has worked with many high school teachers and their students.  There will be an exhibit area that will include vendors of educational materials as well as nonprofit informal education centers.  This is an opportunity for science teachers at all levels to spend about 6 hours hearing about and doing science with your colleagues.  Talk with old friends, meet new ones and join a professional organization that will keep you well informed about science opportunities for you and your students.  The cost of the conference is $10 plus a one year membership (if you are not currently a CRCST member) of $10 ($20 total).  There are other membership options available as well.  A registration form is available at: http://www.jcu.edu/cmsett/CMSETTCRCST_Fallconf_reg.htm

The T3 Regional Conference (Nov. 12 & 13, 2004) will be held at JCU’s Dolan Center for Science and Technology and feature concurrent presentations by math and science educators, aimed at K-16 colleagues, from all over the country.  An afternoon of pre-conference presentations will begin on Friday afternoon followed by a light supper and a keynote talk from one of the founders of Teachers Teaching with Technology (T3) Dr. Frank Demana.  Saturday will be filled with concurrent sessions and “Big” idea sessions in the auditorium.  T3 conferences focus on the appropriate and leading edge use of technology (handheld, computer, robotics, and more) in classrooms.  Educators that have developed and used technological methods that work pass on the skills and techniques to their peers.  Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided on Saturday.  Registration is $60 ($30 for undergraduate students).  Links to the registration form, hotels and directions can be accessed at:  http://www.jcu.edu/cmsett/CMSETT_TI_regional_conference.htm
