General Program Description
Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), in partnership
with the Cleveland Municipal School District (CMSD) is proud to offer
the Cleveland Mathematics and Science Partnership, a collection
of innovative professional development programs for CMSD high school
mathematics and science teachers.
With support
trom the National Science Foundation, CWRU and CMSD faculty have
devel¬oped a unique laboratory-based
model for sustained and coordinated professional development in mathematics
and the sciences.
Participants in the Cleveland Mathematics and Science
Partnership will be required to make a three year commitment
to strengthen their content knowledge and integrate new teaching
strategies in the classroom. The laboratory based
courses are built on a foundation of inquiry and problem-based
learning and will blend deep content with the process skills necessary
for the successful teaching of science and mathematics.
All courses
offered through the Cleveland Mathematics and Science Partnership
will be aligned with state and district standards.
Non-degree graduate credit will be available at a discounted
rate (2 credits, $502/credit hour) through CWRU, which may be transferred
to Cleveland State University and applied to the M. Ed. Degree in
Curriculum and Instruction in Secondary Education. Participants in
the mathematics, biology, and chemistry programs will receive a stipend
of $1,000 payable upon the successful completion of each summer
workshop. Participants in the physical science track will receive
$1500.
Selection Criteria
1. Current employment in the Cleveland Municipal School
District as a high school
mathematics or science teacher.
2. Three to five years of successful mathematics or
science teaching at the high school level.
3. Agreement to teach at least two years in your field
in the CMSD high school system upon completion of the program.
4. Active
participation in all phases of the program.
This includes attending all summer sessions and participating
in the follow-up meetings during the academic year.
5. Commitment
to complete all three years of the program.

Cleveland
Mathematics and Science Partnership
represents an outstanding and unique professional development opportunity
for the motivated teacher, but a significant commitment is required
by that individual.
1. Commit
to three years of coordinated, sustained, and focused professional
development in your discipline. This includes
three summer workshops and on-going interaction during
the school year.
2. Teach in the Cleveland Municipal School District
for a minimum of two years upon completion of the program.
3. Participation
in evaluation activities conducted
by CMSD inclusive of, but not limited to, surveys, classroom observations,
and teacher assessment of content knowledge.

CMSD high
school mathematics and science teachers should complete and submit
the enclosed interest form and also

The following items are due by April 2, 2004:
l. Essay
of interest addressing: Why you want to enroll in the program;
How this fits into your personal professional
development plan and; What effect do you envision your par¬ticipation
in this program will have on your teaching?
Note.. Your essay is an important tool in evaluating
your application.
2. Copy of teaching certificate
3. Two letters of recommendation, one trom
your school principal and one from a colleague or parent of
a current student.>
