| Mathematics Track
The three year sequence of courses in the mathematics
track is designed to help high school mathematics teachers strengthen
their skills in teaching. The courses may be taken in any order,
as material will be presented "horizontally rather than
vertically" as much as possible. Participants will be exposed
to a variety of problems in these courses, many that will be applicable
for use in the courses they teach during the year, and some
that they themselves will struggle with a great deal.
One goal of the sequence is to strengthen the mathematical
background of the teachers, particularly in areas that will
directly benefit the participant in his/her own teaching. Another
is to expose teachers to current ideas in education, primarily through
discussion with the other teachers enrolled in the course. Questions
of pedagogy will trequently be raised and discussed, encouraging
each teacher to think about his/her own teaching practices and philosophies.
The courses will make use oftecbnology available to high school
teachers, in an attempt to give teachers a chance to develop ways
to implement technology in their own classrooms. Topics that
will be explored in this sequence include Number Theory, Geometry,
Probability and Statistics, Combinatorics, and Problem Solving.
Goals and objectives: Upon completion
of the three year sequence in mathematics, teachers will become skilled
at asking
questions to promote thought and encouraging students to justify
their own thought processes while assuming the role of facilitator
more often. |
