| Science Tracks
Year One: Parallel tracks will be offered in biology,
chemistry, and physical science. Each program will begin with a summer
workshop (two weeks for biology and chemistry, three weeks for physical
science) consisting ora broad overview of inquiry-based laboratory
exercises that will form the foundation of the high school science
curriculum. Teachers will couple new content with inquiry-based strate¬gies
for investigating major concepts in each discipline.
During the academic year following the Year One summer
workshop, CMSD teachers and CWRU faculty will meet individually and
as a cohort to tackle the challenges associated with implementing
the lessons learned in the
workshops. These meetings will take place monthly for the cohort,
and at least once a quarter for individual school visits.
Years Two/Three: Workshops in Year One and Two will
cover a wide range of fundamental topics within each discipline.
During the summer of Year Three, teachers will continue to build
their content and laboratory knowledge with more focused coursework.
In Year Three, the content will be concentrated on a specific area
within the discipline.
Goals and objectives: Upon completion of the three
year sequence in biology, chemistry, or physical science, teachers
will have a much richer and current content knowledge in their discipline,
received thorough training in the use of inquiry as a way of learning
science, sharpened their laboratory skills, and broadened their
repertoire of laboratory exercises. |
