Dr. Patrizia Bonaventura got her Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Sciences in 2003 at The Ohio State University, and joined the CASE Communication Sciences Department in 2005. Dr. Bonaventura has a background in phonetics, speech science, linguistics, and speech processing. She worked previously for ten years in multilingual speech recognition and synthesis for Italian Telecom, Hamburg University and speech tech companies in the US. Her present research activities focus on investigation of motor control mechanisms in normal and disordered speech production, by x-ray microbeam and EMA data analysis: in particular, she works on childhood apraxia of speech data in developmental cross-linguistic studies. Also, her activity focuses on intonation modeling based on stemmatic semio-syntactic analysis, for applications to speech synthesis; this project is carried out in the LARCS Lab.

Austin Bennett is a CWRU undergraduate student, who created his own major in Cognitive Linguistics and plans to graduate in 2009. After graduation he intends to continue studying in this field. Austin got a SOURCE Grant from CWRU, enabling him to travel to Denmark as the first undergraduate accepted to an Empirical Methods in Cognitive Linguistics Workshop, where he was trained in the design of and methods for conducting independent research. In LARCS, Austin works on segmentation and labeling of acoustic data for automatic extraction of prosodic contours (see project 2).

Lauren Miller is a CASE undergraduate student with a speech pathology major and plans to graduate in 2010. After graduation she hopes to work as an SLP in the greater Philadelphia area. Lauren got an Experiential Learning Grant from CASE, which gave her the opportunity to travel to the Clinic CRC, in Rome, Italy, affiliated with the COSI Department, and had the chance to attend speech therapy sessions, so getting professional experience in multicultural approaches to speech therapy. See her travel impressions here. In CSPL, Lauren works on analysis of acoustic data from Italian speaking children in normal development.

Laura Germann is a CASE undergraduate student with a Speech Pathology, a Cognitive Science and a Psychology major, plans to graduate in 2010. After graduating from CWRU, she plans to go to graduate school for Speech Pathology. In LARCS, Laura works on phonetic segmentation and labeling of the speech corpus for automatic extraction of prosodic contours (see project 2).

Max Jensen is a CWRU undergraduate student with a major in Cognitive Science and Spanish, and plans to graduate in Spring 2009. After graduation he hopes to continue his studies in Cognitive Linguistics and language theory. In LARCS, Max works on design of the speech corpora, linearization on the basis of the STEMMA model, and on segmentation and labeling of acoustic data for automatic extraction of prosodic contours (see project 2).

Emily Hornak is a CASE graduate student in speech-language pathology, and plans to graduate in 2010. After graduation she hopes to work with adults in medical settings. In CSPL, Emily takes care of recruitment, screening and assistance in recording, children for the project on Childhood Apraxia of Speech.
