Alumni E-mail Update

Case Western Reserve University is now offering all alumni the opportunity to keep their "alumni.case.edu" e-mail address indefinitely. Your Case User ID (formerly the CWRUser ID) entitles you to a forwarding e-mail address that won't change when you change jobs or e-mail providers. Case will provide a service that forwards e-mail addressed to you as "alumni.case.edu" to one non-Case e-mail account of your choice. The forwarding service is free of charge.

It is important to understand that this service does not provide an e-mail account through Case Western Reserve University; it simply provides a forwarding service to the e-mail account of your choice. Alumni with pre-existing accounts (formerly CWRUser) will keep their current username, and should use their current password when activating the e-mail forwarding services.

All Case Western Reserve University alumni are eligible for this service. Current students and Case Western Reserve University employees are NOT eligible for this service, and should contact the office of Information Technology Services to establish e-mail forwarding.

As of August 2, 2004, all "alumni.case.edu" accounts will be changed to e-mail forwarding only accounts. The size of the account mailbox will change to zero and all mail that remains in those accounts will be deleted. We highly recommend that you remove all mail from the account before the e-mail forwarding service is activated.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's an Internet Service Provider?

An internet service provider (ISP) is a company that provides access to the Internet. Before you can connect to the Internet and get an e-mail account, you must first establish an account with an Internet service provider. When choosing an ISP, consider signing up with one that has a local access number so you won't have to dial long distance to connect.

How do I activate the new e-mail forwarding service?

First, make arrangements with an Internet service provider for an e-mail account. Then, sign up for the free e-mail forwarding service through www.case.edu/alumni/services/e-mailf.html. e-mail sent to your "alumni.case.edu" address will be forwarded to your ISP e-mail account (e.g., Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.). You'll access it the same way you read and send mail from your e-mail account.

How long does it take to activate my e-mail forwarding service?

Normally, it takes 2-4 hours to activate your e-mail forwarding service. The activation time may vary depending on a number of factors, including the speed of your Internet connection. You will receive confirmation via e-mail when processing is complete.

How will I receive my messages?

Your messages will be delivered through your Internet service provider. The Case User ID (e.g. xyz123@alumni.case.edu) can no longer be used as an e-mail account and does not have its own "inbox." Because we have changed to a e-mail forwarding service, you will need to have a working e-mail account with an ISP (e.g., Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.). You will access mail sent to your "alumni.case.edu" address the same way you read and send the mail through your ISP.

Will my e-mail be sold to businesses?

No.

I already forward my Case Western Reserve University student e-mail account to an ISP. Will I need to register for the e-mail forwarding service when I graduate?

Yes. When you graduate, the forwarding arrangement you had as a student will end 180 days after Commencement. You will need to register for a Case User ID and then activate the e-mail forwarding service. Click here for details.

How quickly will I receive my forwarded e-mail?

There will be a delay in receiving your forwarded mail since it will be routed through Case Western Reserve University. The delay is usually minimal and only takes a few minutes longer than mail sent directly. We forward mail on a best-effort basis, so we can't guarantee how quickly it will be delivered.
