CWRU Dental Students Receive Nearly $30,000 in Scholarships
The Ohio Dental Association Foundation (ODAF), largely supported by Ohio
Dental Association member dentists, recently announced its scholarship
and grant awards for 2011. This year, CWRU dental students Kate
Cartwright, Julia Salmeron, Bethany Doroghazi, Jessica Chrzanowski and
Noor Almudallal each received scholarships. Read more.

Alumni Event Success
Under the leadership of Dean Lawrence Mitchell, the
School of Law has implemented several new initiatives to engage recent
alumni. The dean and alumni relations staff have been traveling the
country to meet with young alumni at unique evening events. Most
recently, successful events were held in Washington, D.C., and Chicago.
Attendees expressed appreciation for the opportunity to meet the dean
and to learn more about the many activities occurring at the law school.
This is one of several new initiatives the law
school has established to further engage our alumni, our most essential
supporters!

Attend Dialogue On Discovery with Keynote Julie Gerberding
Julie Gerberding, MD, MPH (MED '81), former CDC director and current president of Merck Vaccines, will discuss innovative partnerships that lead to health impact, as part of the Dialogue On Discovery event on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 a.m. at the School of Medicine. RSVPs are required to attend the complimentary sit-down breakfast and keynote.
Following the keynote, there are breakout sessions for researchers and medical professionals geared to expand awareness of the Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative (CTSC). Dialogue On Discovery is an inaugural summit celebrating the research successes of the School of Medicine’s academic and clinical partnerships. Read more.

August Filled with Accolades for Baer
Eric Baer, Herbert Henry Dow Professor of Science and Engineering, was named a Distinguished University Professor along with six other faculty members during this year’s Convocation. The highest honor Case Western Reserve bestows upon a member of the
faculty, this permanent title acknowledges the exceptional records of
teaching, scholarship and service.
Baer, who launched the nation’s first department of macromolecular science, was also named a fellow of the American Chemical Society earlier in the month. He is the first Case Western Reserve faculty
member to be named a fellow of this prestigious organization. Read more.

American Music Masters 2011 Celebrates Aretha Franklin
The legendary Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, will be honored as part of the 16th annual American Music Masters series, a collaboration between the College of Arts and Sciences and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.
Each year, the two institutions present workshops, lectures, exhibits and other events that shine a new light on influential artists. This year’s weeklong program celebrating Franklin’s pioneering musical contributions begins Oct. 31 and culminates with a conference and dazzling tribute concert Nov. 5. Leading Expert on Violence Joins Mandel School Faculty
One of the country’s leading experts on violence joined Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences in July.
Daniel Flannery, a professor of public health and founding director of Kent State University’s Institute for the Study and Prevention of Violence, is the new Begun Professor and director of the Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education.
Flannery receives about $6 million from various grant sources for his research and averages about $2.5 million annually to support his work. With Cleveland ranked No. 2 in poverty for large cities—and with two of the city’s neighborhoods listed among the most violent in the country—Flannery’s research will have direct and local impact, says Dean Cleve Gilmore.
