Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences

Introducing Integrated Primary and
Behavioral Healthcare

The Center for Evidence- Based Practices at The Mandel School has teamed up with Shawnee Mental Health Center in Portsmouth, Ohio to develop one of the first planning and evaluation instruments in the U.S. that helps organizations integrate primary and behavioral healthcare for people with severe mental illness. This initiative is funded by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

There is an increasing awareness in the U.S. that people with severe mental illness are likely to die 25 years earlier than people in the general population who do not have a mental illness. It’s an alarming statistic that becomes even more startling when you learn that these fatalities occur mainly because of chronic medical conditions—like lung disease, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and infections—most of which can be prevented, treated, or managed. The illnesses contribute more to premature deaths among people with severe mental illness than suicide. Read more.

$1.5 Million Gift from Michael D. Eppig (MED '77) and Ruth S. Eppig

The School of Medicine is pleased to announce a $1.5 million commitment from School of Medicine alumnus Michael D. Eppig, MD, (MED '77) and his wife Ruth S. Eppig. The Eppigs' gift will help fund a new medical education and research building that will serve as the School of Medicine's headquarters. Dean Pamela B. Davis, MD, PhD, announced the gift during the university's Homecoming Weekend, at which Eppig celebrated his 35th medical school class reunion.

In September, the university also announced $20 million in gifts, $10 million each, from the Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundation and the Cleveland Foundation. The Plain Dealer editorial board then issued a call to action to the community to step up and join these foundations in generating the $50 million in philanthropy needed to fund the project. Dr. and Mrs. Eppig are the first to rise to this challenge. "Ruth and I are honored to help realize Dean Davis' vision for the future of the School of Medicine. As Clevelanders, we see how important the School of Medicine is to the local medical sector and community as a whole," said Eppig. Read more.
