New Therapy Marks Milestone in Fight Against Cystic Fibrosis
Results of the pivotal Phase 3 clinical trial published in the Nov. 3, 2011 New England Journal of Medicine, find that the oral medication ivacaftor (VX-770) provides major, sustained improvement in lung function, growth and other signs and symptoms for cystic fibrosis (CF) patients.
The multi-site study marks the first time a drug has been shown to work on the disease process rather than on the symptoms. The study was co-authored by Michael W. Konstan, MD, chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and UH Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. Read more.

Embedded Sustainability Out Now
Chris Laszlo, PhD, associate professor of organizational behavior, published a new book with co-author Nadya Zhexembayeva, (MGT '08). Embedded Sustainability: The Next Big Competitive Advantage, out now from Stanford Business Books, criticizes companies whose sustainability efforts are limited to charitable donations or to a (mainly symbolic) “eco-friendly” line of products. These are companies that continue to do their day-to-day business without considering the social or environmental impact of their activities, while claiming to “go green” for the sake of public relations.
Laszlo describes this as “bolted-on” sustainability. In contrast, companies that “embed” sustainability in their business model make it part of every decision. Laszlo argues that this benefits not just people and the planet, but the companies themselves.

Mandel School Receives Grants
for Police Referral Program
Police officers who patrol Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority estates have been employing a new tool in the never ending battle against violent crime—a phone number that residents can use to seek help. The Mandel School received funding to continue the Police Assisted Referral Program developed by the school's Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education and initiated by CMHA. Other partners include Mental Health Services Inc. and the Partnership for a Safer Cleveland.
In October, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation made a grant of $200,000 to keep the police referral program operating. That grant is being matched by donations from the Cleveland Foundation, St. Luke's Foundation and the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland.
