CWRU programs make "U.S. News"
top graduate, professional school rankings

Case Western Reserve’s health law program leapt to fifth in the nation and pediatrics climbed to 14th in U.S. News & World Report’s annual graduate and professional school rankings released on March 12. Those gains, coupled with a seven-point jump, to 30th, for the Weatherhead School of Management’s Part-Time MBA, signaled the university’s ability to make meaningful gains even as some programs struggle. Spartan Club Announces Hall of
Fame Class of 2013

The Spartan Club, in conjunction with Case Western Reserve University Athletics, has announced its Hall of Fame induction class of 2013. Six former student-athletes will join the 324 members previously enshrined since the club’s inception in 1975. The new members will be enshrined at the annual Spartan Club banquet on Friday, April 26.

Law School’s Teams Excel
in Moot Court Competitions


The law school's moot court teams have enjoyed yet another successful year in regional, national, and international competitions. From the Niagara Team's second-place finish in Toronto, to the First Amendment Team's Best Brief Award at Vanderbilt, the success of the our moot court teams exemplifies the law school's commitment to producing prominent legal oralists.

School of Medicine

Researchers Discover Promising Prognostic Marker for Aggressive Breast Cancer

A team of researchers led by Goutham Narla, MD, PhD, at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals Case Medical Center, and collaborators at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Erasmus Medical Center, have discovered a gene variant that drives the spread of breast cancer.

Published in Scientific Translational Medicine, the study lays the early foundation for predicting which breast cancer patients may develop more aggressive disease and for designing more effective treatments. Read more.

Weatherhead School of Management

Professor Boyatzis Brings Emotional Intelligence Online

This spring, Case Western Reserve University will dip a toe into the rapidly expanding world of massive open online courses, or MOOCs, and Richard Boyatzis, PhD, Distinguished University Professor and H.R. Horvitz Professor in Family Business, is taking the lead.

Boyatzis’ free online class, Inspiring Leadership through Emotional Intelligence, will begin on May 1, 2013, and will be six weeks long. It is the first MOOC to focus on leadership and will be offered through Coursera, a company that works with universities to set up their MOOCs. Watch Boyatzis talk about his class. Read more.

Case School of Engineering

Students and Alumni Develop
Energy-Smart Solutions; Advance to Regionals for Clean Energy Challenge

Two Case Western Reserve student teams—mentored by alumni—advanced to the Midwest Regionals of the Clean Energy Challenge, sponsored by the Department of Energy. The group NanoHarv is developing a micro-algae-harvesting device to clean water and create biofuel, and the group Ecospinners (pictured) is designing an electric fuel-cell-powered bicycle with a 100-mile range.

Both teams—made up of students from engineering, management and arts and sciences—head to the regional competition in Chicago on April 4. CWRU is the only university in the Midwest to have two teams move on to regionals. Learn more about the contest.

Chair Named Top Educator of First-Year Students in the U.S.

Professor Lee Thompson, chair of the Department of Psychological Sciences, has earned a national honor for her work with undergraduate students. In February, she received the McGraw-Hill Excellence in Teaching First-Year Seminars Award, the third person (and first from Case Western Reserve) to receive the recognition.

In 2001, Thompson was one of the founding co-directors of the SAGES program, which helps first-year students develop essential communication skills and acclimate to university life. Read more.

Avatars May Reduce Depressive
Symptoms in Young Adults  


The use of virtual avatars may help young adults prepare for office visits, learn self-management skills, and relieve depression, according to a recent study published in Applied Nursing Research by KL2 Clinical Research Scholar and Instructor Melissa Pinto, PhD, RN. The study, which Pinto believes to be the first of its kind, suggests that subjects who interacted with virtual nurse practitioners and physicians in the Case Western Reserve University-developed software program, eSMART-MH, experienced a significant reduction in depression symptoms. White House Invites Dan Flannery to Address School Violence Prevention  

When the White House assembled a panel of experts for last month's discussion about preventing school violence, Vice President Joseph Biden made sure Dan Flannery was on it.

Flannery, director of Case Western Reserve University’s Dr. Semi J. and Ruth W. Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education in the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, joined national education and safety experts to discuss ways to make schools, universities and community gathering places safer for the public. School of Dental Medicine

Multiple Testing Methods Needed to
Better Detect, Treat Infection in Low
Birth-Weight Newborns

New research by Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine and Yale University School of Medicine finds that cultures commonly used to detect bacterial infections in low birth-weight newborns with early onset sepsis may actually overlook some germs.

The research done at Case Western Reserve supports the need for multiple detection methods, such as DNA genomic analyses and other independent culture technologies, to identify bacteria that culturing may miss, said Yiping Han, professor of Periodontics and Reproductive Biology at the Case Western Reserve dental school and the corresponding author on the study.
