Lifelong Learning

Once a CWRU graduate, you will always be a lifelong learner!

As a CWRU graduate, you have endless opportunities to learn in the world around you and take advantage of the resources your alma mater has to offer. The Lifelong Learning website provides numerous opportunities to reconnect with the university.  For example, our MediaVision Courseware allows you to view video online of more than 50 courses recorded each semester. You can also feel more connected to the university by going to the Case YouTube Channel or by downloading Case iTunesU for free as an alum. Those are just two of the opportunities to connect with CWRU on the Lifelong Learning website.

Case School of Engineering

Alumnus Creates New Engineering Professorship in Energy & Materials

previewCase Western Reserve University alumnus Thomas W. Seitz and his wife, Nancy, have endowed a new chair at the Case School of Engineering. The Thomas W. and Nancy P. Seitz Professorship in Advanced Materials and Energy is the second endowed chair supporting the efforts of the Great Lakes Energy Institute (GLEI).

The professorship represents the first philanthropic investment in the Engineering Strategic Hiring Initiative, which aims to attract outstanding scientists in the school's priority areas of advanced materials, energy and human health. Launched last spring, the effort targets professors committed to collaboration on interdisciplinary work. It also focuses on enhancing diversity of the engineering school's faculty. Read more.

Taiwanese Nursing Students Visit FPB for Nursing Skills and Educational Training

Continuing the FPB School of Nursing's tradition of hosting international students for extensive training programs, Taiwan's Chang Gung Institute of Technology Department of Nursing sent eight undergraduate nursing students and a faculty member to FPB to engage in an intensive month-long educational visit incorporating a wide variety of nursing-related educational and clinical activities. An Essential Addition to Officers' Tool Belts

What patrol officers of the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority Police Department frequently find on calls within the housing estates is not criminal activity, but families in potential need of social-service help. So they partnered with social-work professor Mark Singer and Mental Health Services to develop a unique referral program to address these situations. Watch video.

School of Law

School of Law team wins Jessup Super Regional Competition

The law school's Jessup Team won the Midwest Regional Competition in Chicago.

previewThe CWRU Jessup team, consisting of Cameron MacLeod, Elizabeth Sparks, Jory Hoffman, and Tyler Talbert, won all four preliminary rounds against DePaul, Michigan State, Tennessee, and Iowa, then MacLeod and Hoffman beat Wayne State in the Quarterfinals and Thomas Cooley in the Semifinals, and Talbert and Sparks beat University of Michigan in the Final Round.

In addition, the CWRU team won the Third Best Brief award, and the awards for the best Final Round oralist (Talbert), third best overall oralist (MacLeod) and tenth best overall oralist (Hoffman). Read more.

School of Medicine

Craig Smith, (MED '77) Interviewed by Barbara Walters

One of the nation's leading cardiac surgeons, Dr. Craig R. Smith (MED'77), was interviewed in February about President Clinton's heart surgery in the Barbara Walters special "A Matter of Life and Death." Dr. Smith performed Clinton's bypass surgery in 2004 at New-York Presbyterian Hospital. He is the chairman of the Department of Surgery at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Fred Collopy, PhD, Featured as Professor of the Week

Financial Times Honors Professor

previewSenior Associate Dean Fred Collopy, PhD, was featured as the Financial Times Professor of the Week in February. Invited to define five key terms specific to his area of research, Dr. Collopy shared insight into the integration of design and management.

Collopy's research includes business forecasting, visualisation, and the application of design ideas to management, concepts that have become important guiding principles within the Weatherhead curricula.
