Two New Graduates Honored with 2012 License Plate Program Scholarships

Eugene Yoon (CWR '12, anthropology and biology) and Ata Adeel (CWR '12, civil engineering and economics) are the 2012 recipients of The Alumni Association's License Plate Program Scholarships.

Yoon, who hopes to be accepted into medical school at Wright State University, says he has wanted to be a doctor since he was in high school. Today, his focus is on international health and medical anthropology.

"If you're going to help people, you have to help them their way," Yoon says. "I love the variety of perspectives presented in anthropology."

Adeel, who is currently at Case Western Reserve working on his master's degree in environmental engineering, has a passion for water protection. Adeel says it was his father, a civil engineer who passed away in 2002, who gave him the motivation and inspiration to pursue engineering. After completing his masters degree, Adeel hopes to use his education to made a difference in Pakistan, where his family resides and where he says the environmental situation is "disappointing."

These scholarships were made possible through the generosity of CWRU alumni and friends through the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles collegiate license plate program. For every $35 Case Western Reserve University license plate sold, $25 is donated to The Alumni Association Scholarship Fund—allowing us to present scholarship dollars to deserving students. Students Win Seed Money for Pothole Patch

You soon could have five Case Western Reserve students to thank for saving your car from the costly damages of potholes. Their innovative pothole patch—a fluid-filled bag resembling silly-putty—stands to hold up longer and better than the traditional stone-and-tar mixture, and just won $9,000 in the university’s Saint-Gobain Design Competition.

The environmentally-friendly patch is simply tossed into the hole, where it conforms to the shape of the pothole, and stiffens the moment a car passes over it. Watch a video of the patch in action and read more about its promise.

Study Identifies the Point When Negative Thoughts Turn into Depression

Mental healthcare providers have a new tool to detect if their patients' thinking patterns may lead to serious depression thanks to Jaclene Zauszniewski, PhD, RN-BC, FAAN, Kate Hanna Harvey Professor in Community Health Nursing and Associate Dean for Doctoral Education.

She has developed the Depression Cognition Scale (DCS)as described in the recent study reported in issue 34 of the Western Journal of Nursing Research.

The scale is made up of eight simple survey questions that asks individuals to rank feelings including helplessness, hopelessness and loneliness from "strongly agree" to "strongly disagree." Zauszniewski says the tool can be used to determine the point at which negative thinking establishes a pattern for the onset of clinical depression. Read more.
