 Alumni Weekend, Family Weekend and Homecoming Team Up in 2012
The last week in September, three campus traditions will be rolled into one not-to-be-missed celebration!
Homecoming: A Celebration of Alumni, Families and Students includes nearly 100 unique events, including the traditional All Alumni Luncheon, the return of the popular THINK Forums series and lots of great reunion activities.
For alumni, the weekend kicks off on Thursday evening with a one-of-a-kind block party showcasing the new Uptown development. Saturday and Sunday feature the annual Spartan Tailgate, the Homecoming football game vs. Wittenberg College and the always fabulous Stephanie Tubbs Jones Gospelfest Concert (just to name a few of dozens of things to choose from)!

Case Western Reserve Secures Federal Funding from Ohio Medicaid
Through the Medicaid Technical Assistance and Policy Program (MEDTAPP) Healthcare Access Initiative (HAI), Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine has secured $6.4 million in federal funds through Ohio Medicaid to support its longstanding involvement in the health of its community.
The MEDTAPP HAI supports the development and retention of healthcare practitioners to serve Ohio’s Medicaid population using emerging healthcare delivery models and evidence-based practices. Read more.

Weatherhead School of Management
Weatherhead Welcomes New Dean
President Barbara R. Snyder announced that Robert E. Widing II, dean of the Macquarie School of Management in Sydney, will become dean of Weatherhead School of Management. The appointment represents a homecoming for Widing, who served on the Weatherhead School faculty from 1988 to 1993.
"Rob Widing possesses the depth of experience and breadth of perspective required to lead in an era of increasing complexity and international engagement," Snyder said. "He also appreciates the vital importance of strategic thinking, philanthropy and continuous improvement of academic offerings. We are pleased to welcome him back to Case Western Reserve." Read more.

Nurse Researcher Surveys Infection Prevention Practices in Home-Care
Assistant Professor Irena Kenneley, PhD, APRN-BC, CIC, reveals in the April issue of Home Healthcare Nurse about home healthcare workers who report about acquiring infections after visiting patients. One example is of a healthy boy who was infected with antibiotic-resistant bacterium that was traced to his mother’s nurse’s bag left in the family’s car after her home health care visit to a patient with the same infection.
Such events illustrate how bacteria from someone sick can infect others, she says. Read more.

Game Helps Researchers Study Perception Deficits
Bingo, a popular activity in nursing homes, senior centers and assisted-living facilities, has benefits that extend well beyond socializing. Researchers found high-contrast, large bingo cards boost thinking and playing skills for people with cognitive difficulties and visual perception problems produced by Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD).
As people age, they begin to lose sensitivity to perceive contrasts. It is exacerbated in people with dementia, according to Grover C. Gilmore, a psychologist and dean of the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences. Read more.

School of Dental Medicine
Dental Researchers Help Unearth Secrets of Evolution
Dean Goldberg, along with students and faculty, will travel to Manot, Israel, to participate in an archeological excavation of a cave that has been sealed for of 20,000 years.
The site—a prehistoric Israeli cave discovered in 2010—houses remains of human ancestors who lived between 30,000 and 20,000 years ago and is the largest and potentially one of the most important archeological sites in Israel. Read more.

Professor Paul Giannelli's Work Cited by U.S. Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of the United States recently cited two of Professor Paul Giannelli's articles in Williams v. Illinois, --- S.Ct. ----, 2012 WL 2202981 (Ill. 2012). This is the eighth time the U.S. Supreme Court has cited his work.
The articles are:
