Bob Reitman (LAW '58) Helps Students Create Lasting Legacy Through Class Gift Program
Soon, the class of 2013 will be leaving the halls of the law school and forging their paths as proud graduates. Much like all graduating classes, leaving their mark for those who follow in their paths is important. The 3L class, with the generous support of distinguished alumnus, Bob Reitman (LAW ’58) will leave their mark through a new 3L Class Gift Program.
This student-driven program raises dollars specifically for the Student Interview Travel Fund, which subsidizes students’ travel expenses for job interviews. After learning of the plans for the 3L class gift, Reitman stated in his letter to the class, “I saw an opportunity to support and encourage what I see as a first recognition of the impact your legal education will have on your future."

Chemistry Researcher Seeks to Understand Why Knee and Hip Replacements Fail
Anna C. Samia, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry, is leading a study investigating why artificial joints deteriorate. Each year, 40,000 Americans undergo surgery to have worn-out knee or hip implants replaced.
Samia, who specializes in metallic nanostructures, has been awarded a five-year, $600,000 National Science Foundation-CAREER grant to create new materials and equipment to test the plastic used to make artificial joints. By imbedding magnetic nanoparticles in the implants, her research team will be able to image them and monitor their degradation over time. Read more.

Revised MNO Program Now Accepting Students for June 2013
Research and training grants awarded to the 35-member Mandel School faculty this past year totaled the highest in the school’s history--a 32 percent increase over the previous year. Awards for comprehensive research and scholarship totaled $8 million--funding studies ranging from prenatal development to end of life issues, micro-examinations of individuals and families and macro studies of neighborhoods and communities.
The studies greatly benefited students, as they are involved in all aspects of the research process. There is also a strong emphasis on applying research findings to pressing challenges in the field. Results from this research have been used by human service agencies, county and state governments and federal agencies to improve practice and service delivery, as well as guide public policy.
