Mirfee Ungier (MED '79, '80), an ophthalmologist in private practice in Parma, Ohio, is a pioneer in minimally invasive cataract surgery with no needle anesthesia. She is also a second generation Case Western Reserve alumna. Her mother, father, aunt, brother, sister and daughter all hold degrees from the university and her parents set up an endowment fund to help future CWRU students.

You're invited to a party to kick off Homecoming weekend—the Blue Block Party, celebrating the grand opening of the new Uptown arts and entertainment district.

Weatherhead School of Management

Announcing the Weatherhead Global MBA


A newly established Global MBA program will enable Weatherhead School of Management students to experience education in China, India and Cleveland. Weatherhead is joining with the School of Economics and Management at Tongji University (SEM-Tongji) in Shanghai, and with Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI) in Jamshedpur, India, for this shared academic venture, which is slated to begin in the second half of 2013.

Each institution expects to enroll 20 students, who will study at SEM-Tongji during the Fall Semester of 2013, at XLRI in the Spring Semester 2014 and at Weatherhead for the Fall Semester 2014. Each student will spend the required fourth semester concentrating on electives of choice at his or her home institution. Read more.

Last year the Case Alumni Association Reunion Weekend and Case Western Reserve Alumni Weekend joined forces. This year, Alumni Weekend merges with Family Weekend and Homecoming to be a blue-and-gray extravaganza! Join fellow Case School of Engineering alumni September 27-30 for a plethora of university and school festivities, including a special celebration of the Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering’s 50th anniversary.

Dark Matter Experiment Nearing Start Date

The search for dark matter is about to take a new step forward—nearly one mile underground. Physics faculty members Tom Shutt and Dan Akerib are part of a 13-institution team hoping to find the long-sought particles deep in a South Dakota gold mine, where cosmic radiation is less likely to interfere with the experiment.

The group’s most sensitive device, the Large Underground Xenon detector, was recently lowered into the mine, with data collection set to begin this year. Read more.

Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing

Ebersbach Estate Trustees Announce $4.7 Million Total Gifts to School of Nursing

Aviator, nurse, pioneer Dorothy Ebersbach (NUR '54) had a desire to help others. This desire stretched even further as the trustees of her estate announced a second $2 million commitment for the Dorothy Ebersbach Academic Center for Flight Nursing at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing.

The decision brings her total gifts to the school to $4.7 million. The announcement came less than a year after Ebersbach herself pledged $2 million to support FPB’s first-of-its-kind acute care flight nursing initiative, originally launched in 2002.

Reunion Weekend Welcomes Back Alumni for Learning and Fun


The last weekend in September, we will celebrate three campus traditions—Reunion, Homecoming and Family Weekend—with one great event, Homecoming: A Celebration of Alumni, Families and Students. Let's Welcome the Class of 2016!


Our 75-person DMD class of 2016 started their dental school education. The new students were welcomed to the profession during the recent White Coat Ceremony.

This year’s class consists of 45 women and 30 men ranging in age from 19 to 37.

Milton A. Kramer Law Clinic Accepted into Pilot Program


Our Milton A. Kramer Law Clinic has been accepted into the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's Patent Law School Clinic Certification Pilot Program. The program allows law students to practice patent law before the USPTO under the guidance of a faculty clinic supervisor. The Selection Committee chose schools with the greatest potential for success based on an excellent IP curriculum, effective outreach to the community, and comprehensive client services. Read more.

NIH Awards $64.6 Million Grant to Case Western Reserve

Case Western Reserve's ambitious collaboration to bring medical discoveries to patients has won an extraordinary endorsement: a $64.6 million federal grant that is the largest ever awarded in Northeast Ohio.

“Five years ago Cleveland’s leading biomedical institutions came together in an unprecedented partnership that put improved health at the center of everything we do,” said School of Medicine dean Pamela B. Davis, MD, PhD, the grant’s principal investigator. “With today’s award, the National Institutes of Health sent a powerful message to all of us: Keep up the good work.” Read more.
