Visit Award-Winning Leutner Commons During Alumni Weekend

Leutner Commons recently won best medium-sized residential dining concept in the National Association of College and University Food Services’(NACUFS) Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards, as well as the grand prize for all residential dining concepts, beating out University of Michigan and Concordia College.
The judges’ criteria included menu concepts, merchandising and presentation, marketing, nutrition and wellness programs, as well as sustainability goals and an overall “wow” factor. Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences
Mandel School Alumna Named MSW Student of the Year
A brand new alumna and May graduate of the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, Ebony Speakes (SAS' 11), was named MSW Student of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers–Ohio Chapter. She will be honored at their 2011 Annual Conference Awards Banquet in December.
As a student, Ebony distinguished herself as a leader in the classroom and in the community. In 2010, she served as an intern in the Washington, D.C., office of Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, working on issues that affect child welfare legislation. As part of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI), Speakes made recommendations on policies affecting children aging out of foster care into self-sufficiency.

White Coat Ceremony Welcomes
New Dentists
Dean Jerold Goldberg, DDS (DEN ’70) and the faculty and staff of the School of Dental Medicine welcomed the 75 members of the Class of 2015 to the dental profession during the White Coat ceremony, held Friday, August 4. David Owsiany, JD, Executive Director of the Ohio Dental Association delivered the keynote address at Amasa Stone Chapel.
The class represents 19 states and five countries. Their overall grade point average is 3.64 and their DAT scores average 19.93 for academics and 20.91 for perceptual ability. We wish them the best of luck over the next four years.

Researchers Restore Breathing After Spinal Cord Injury in Rodent Model
Researchers at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine bridged a spinal cord injury and biologically regenerated lost nerve connections to the diaphragm, restoring breathing in an adult rodent model of spinal cord injury.
The work, which restored 80 to more than 100 percent of breathing function, was published in the online issue of the journal Nature on July 14. The scientists say that more testing is necessary but are hopeful their technique will quickly be used in clinical trials.

New Artificial Lung Runs on Air,
Not Pure Oxygen
An artificial lung built by a research team lead by Joe Potkay, a research assistant professor in electrical engineering and computer science, is akin to the genuine organ, using air—not pure oxygen as current man-made lungs require—for the source of the essential element. Potkay is the lead author of the paper describing the device and research, published in the journal Lab on a Chip. This breakthrough could eventually help 200 million lung disease sufferers worldwide. » Read more

New Study Shows Worrying Can Put Relationships at Risk
Amy Przeworski, assistant professor of psychology, led a research study showing that obsessive worrying can endanger the health of social relationships. People with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) often put their relationships with family, friends or co-workers at risk by the negative methods they use to cope—from excessive nurturing to extreme detachment.

Preparing Future Nurses for the OR
Beginning this fall, the FPB School of Nursing will introduce mandatory perioperative nursing content to its undergraduate curriculum, becoming one of the first nursing schools in the country to do so.
Atkinson Scholar of Perioperative Nursing Rebecca Patton and BSN Program Director and Associate Dean of the Undergraduate Program Marilyn Lotas are overseeing this innovative new program, which will bolster nursing students' skills in and improve their understanding of infection control and sterile techniques.
