Professor of Medicine; Director of the Blood & Marrow Transplantation Program at the Ireland Cancer Center
Education:
MD-University of Rochester, 1974
Training:
Case Western Reserve University (Hematology/Oncology)
Special Interest:
Dr. Lazarus has had a long-standing clinical and laboratory interest in the use of high-dose chemo-radiation therapy with and without autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell infusion. For the past 18 years he has been the Director of the Blood & Marrow Transplantation Program at the Ireland Cancer Center. He has been a nationally recognized leader in the design and execution of dose-intensive clinical protocols and programs to provide enhanced anti-tumor benefit. He has shown that the dose of various chemotherapeutic agents, alone or in combination can be increased many fold, resulting in improved anti-tumor effectiveness. He has a particular interest in the development and application of a number of supportive care agents and techniques designed to attenuate or avoid the toxic effects of anti-cancer therapy; these include recombinant hematopoietic growth factors, hematopoietic stem cells procurement and purification methodologies, bone marrow stromal (mesenchymal stem) cells, blood component transfusions, and prophylactic and therapeutic use of anti-microbial agents. His clinical interests also include the treatment of hematologic malignancies such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Dr. Lazarus has been the Chair of the Bone Marrow Transplant Committee of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) since 1986 and co-chair of the Lymphoma Committee of the International Bone Marrow Transplant Registry since 1992.
